Are Standard Poodles hypoallergenic?

By Kathryn Casey··5 min read

The short answer

Standard Poodles are one of the lowest-allergen dog breeds available, and they are tolerated by most people with mild to moderate dog allergies. They are not, however, truly hypoallergenic. No dog is. Every dog produces the protein that triggers human dog allergies. Standard Poodles simply release far less of it into the air and onto furniture than shedding breeds, which is why allergy sufferers do so well with them.

What the word actually means

The word hypoallergenic is a marketing term, not a medical one. It means “below the normal level of allergens,” and in dogs it has no regulatory definition at all. When a breeder, groomer, or pet-food brand calls a dog hypoallergenic, they are making a relative claim, not an absolute one.

The American Kennel Club maintains a list of breeds they consider the best choices for allergy sufferers , and Standard Poodles sit at the top of that list alongside Bichon Frises and Portuguese Water Dogs. The common thread between every breed on that list is a low-shed, single-coat structure rather than a double coat that drops dander twice a year.

Why Standard Poodles trigger fewer reactions

Dog allergies are a reaction to a protein called Can f 1, which is produced primarily in saliva and skin, not in fur. The fur is the delivery system. When a shedding dog drops hair, that hair carries saliva residue and dead skin cells, and those particles become airborne in the home. A Standard Poodle coat grows like human hair. It does not release in seasonal bursts, and the dander stays with the dog until it is washed or brushed out.

This has 3 practical consequences for allergy sufferers. First, air levels of dog dander stay much lower in a house with a Standard Poodle than in a house with a Labrador or Golden Retriever. Second, soft furnishings like sofas and rugs accumulate less dander over time. Third, a weekly brush and a grooming appointment every 4 to 6 weeks removes the bulk of the dander before it has the chance to circulate.

A Standard Poodle does not shed dander the way other breeds do. It stores it, and then the groomer removes it on schedule.

How to test at home before committing

Before bringing home a Standard Poodle puppy, any allergy sufferer should spend at least 3 extended visits with adult Standard Poodles in a real home environment. Not a kennel, not a shop, not a show ring. A house, with the dog on the sofa, for a minimum of 2 hours per visit.

If symptoms appear under those conditions, they will appear at home too. If symptoms stay quiet, there is a very good chance the allergy sufferer will live comfortably with the dog. Any responsible breeder will allow and encourage these visits as part of the application process.

Daily life with a Standard Poodle if you have allergies

Allergy sufferers living with a Standard Poodle do 5 things consistently, and those 5 things determine whether the household stays comfortable.

  1. Professional grooming every 4 to 6 weeks, without exception.
  2. Daily brushing during the coat change between 8 and 14 months.
  3. A HEPA air filter in the main living room and the bedroom.
  4. Hardwood or tile floors in the rooms where the dog spends most of its day.
  5. A no-dogs-on-the-bed rule for sensitive sleepers.

Families who keep to those 5 rules rarely report meaningful allergy symptoms after the first month. Families who let the coat go 8 weeks between groomings and who skip brushing almost always do.
